Caroline County Sheriff's Office The Caroline County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency.
Caroline County consists of a total area of 326 square miles.
Deputies are responsible to patrol over 470 miles of roadway.
The Caroline County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for Caroline County Maryland.
With various professional fields such as Patrol, Narcotics, Canine Unit, and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), to name a few, the Caroline County Sheriff's Office has the skills, expertise, and professional staff to handle any situation that it may face.
DEFINITION This is a civilian, non-sworn position performed on behalf of the Caroline County Sheriff's Office.
An employee in this class, with general supervision from the designated Commander of the Support Services Division and/or the Criminal Investigation Division, serves legal process and court documents on residents of Caroline County and will also manage registration compliance for all sex offenders living and working in Caroline County.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Receives court/legal documents and other administrative papers from a clerical employee and the courts, sorts them geographically and establishes a route to follow for the day.
May decide to serve only specific districts on any given day.
Serves documents on the designated recipients of court/legal process.
Returns receipts to a clerical employee for file and/or dissemination.
Enter information pertaining to service of documents into the Sheriff's Office records management system.
Maintain and review the day-to-day management of the Sex Offender Registry for Caroline County.
Conduct initial registrations and re-registrations on all sex offenders claiming residency in Caroline County on or before their respective registration expiration dates.
Conducts employment verifications of all registered sex offenders in Caroline County.
Notify the Criminal Investigation Commander of any registered sex offender found to be in violation of the Annotated Code of Maryland.
Communicates and maintains a working relationship with the State of Maryland Sex Offender Registry Unit and with other Sex Offender Registry units in surrounding jurisdictions in an effort to track and monitor offenders.
May have to appear in court to testify regarding service of documents or any non-compliant sex offenders.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must be able to develop a working knowledge of that portion of the Maryland Annotated Code which governs the service of the civil process, evictions, levy's, Sheriff's Sales, and other facets of the Maryland Civil Process and summons system.
Thorough knowledge of Annotated Code of Maryland, Caroline County ordinances; thorough knowledge of Caroline County Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations; shift operations and functions; knowledge of Caroline County Government resources, state, and federal agencies; knowledge of the District Court Commissioner system, courtroom procedures; courtroom testimony, problem solving techniques; investigative methods; grammar, spelling, and arithmetic.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper and legal courses of action to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, with respect for the rights of others, to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
Must be able to keep a calm, mature & respectful demeanor in the face of agitated individuals.
Must be able to become familiar with the geography of the county.
Must be flexible in his/her schedule (i.
e.
:
early morning hours and late evening hours) throughout the week in order to pick the best times to serve civil process on individuals avoiding service.
Skill in the operation of a motor vehicle.
Must have basic knowledge of operating a computer.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND
Experience:
Graduation from an accredited high school or be in possession of a General Education Development (G.
E.
D.
) Certificate acceptable to the Maryland Department of Education, one year work experience in a position dealing with the public.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Prior law enforcement, paralegal, or associate in arts degree or higher in Criminal Justice or a closely related subject.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Maryland Class C driver's license May have no more than four (4) points on driving record at the time of hire and while employed in this class series.
METERS/NCIC Certification must be able to obtain within 6 months of employment Upon an employment offer, applicants must submit to a substance abuse test and complete criminal background check.
